Ever Have Photographs Bring Back The Scent of a Memory?
Inhabitants of The UK are seemingly so in touch with their senses that they will remember the smell linked with a scene or location just by looking at a picture of it. That’s according to a study released by a major camera manufacturer to commemorate the launch of its most recent digicams, which they claim capture memories in more clear detail than ever before.
The study, which was conducted across 23 countries, made public that 47% of Brit folk surveyed can recall the scent linked with a picture, and many claimed they would actively take a picture of something based purely on the way that it smells. The results also show that British women are much more likely to pay attention to the scent of their surroundings when taking a picture than men, with over a quarter saying they would capture an image of something that smells appealing for example a rose garden. This information is very important for people who are looking for new Canon cameras.
Commenting on the study, Dr Raquel Heinz, a leading world expert in the psychological science of smell and a professor at a major college, said : This studies show just how powerful the linkage between our memories and the sense of smell truly is. While a picture can visually remind us of a particular point in time, if it is accompanied by smell it’ll elicit more emotional and evocative memories more than any other memory trigger.
When asked to rate a list of smells that were most inclined to trigger a memory, over 53% of europeans surveyed named the hint of freshly cut grass as their top Memory smell, with the smell of suntan lotion and baby talc coming in at 2nd and third.
Referring to the results, Dr Heinz recounted: “For a number of years scientists have conducted research into the link between our senses and our ability to recall memories. My research shows that our sense of smell particularly has a uniquely intimate and direct connection with the area of the brain that controls emotional memory. Its not surprising that so many folks selected freshly cut grass and sun lotion as their top memory smells, as these smells are strongly connected with childhood – the time when our first smell memories are being formed. For most smells connected with youth such as the scent of a hot summers day in the fairground have an especially robust ability to trigger an emotional memory that takes them back to their youth.”
A representative for a major electronic camera manufacturer comments: “While an image is the final way to capture and document lifes most valuable memories, we needed to try something a little different and determine if there was another factor involved in recalling a certain point.” The manufacturer has been exploring every angle that people pursue when wanting for new Sony digital cameras.
This research into the smells associated with memories shows that not only do British folks have a wonderful ability to remember certain scenes and locations based totally on smells and smells, the majority also make a deliberate attempt to maximize the power of these memories for themselves.
Digital cameras can save your memories better than ever before, and though they dont quite capture smell just yet, they certainly can rouse the memory of it! So when you are looking for a new digital camera keep your eyes, and nose, open wide.
