Preparing Pictures for Publication with Digital Photo Albums

So you’re ready to publish the first of many digital photo books. Preliminary decisions regarding size, theme and background already have been made. Seems simple, so you begin uploading images…. Just as you’re about to see how great it looks, you get that nasty red pop-up telling you that your pictures are not print-worthy. Whaaaat??

Digital cameras are the rage these days, as they should be. Never before has the art of photography become so user-friendly, and the photos taken, in nearly every instance, are of above-average quality, no matter the skill level of the photographer.

You might ask what it is about digital photography that sets it apart from traditional photography, creating an easy, natural transition that enables people like yourself to, with little effort, create personalized photo books for you, your family, or your friends.

Some specifics

  • Pixels are miniscule squares of color
  • Digital cameras create digitized images comprised of hundred of thousands of tiny pixels
  • Pixels per square inch (PPI) dictate the resolution of your final image

Pixel sizes on most Internet photos are regularly smaller in dimension than those generated by digital cameras, a fact that does not detract from the quality of Internet images shown on your computer screen. Plus, smaller images download much faster than larger ones when launched from websites.

When the process is reversed and we are uploading photos to image-hosting sites, the most commonly used method is to accelerate the process by compressing the images in jpg format. The time it takes to upload original images is ten times greater if you choose not to compress pixel sizes. Some sites automatically compress images to smaller file sizes without even asking for manageability and space purposes.

Saving disks in their original format is a precaution that will protect you from deleting pics before you are prepared to do so.

What, if anything, can be done at this point to guarantee the best quality of your final images?

For all practical purposes, it’s out of your hands at this point.

There are simply not enough pixels in most Internet images to allow them to print digital photo books at high quality. Current technology does not allow us to restore the higher resolution lost in the compression process. Only the high resolution in images that have not been compressed will generate the best printability in your photo book.
